Verbal description This ear dagger dated to the beginning of the 16th century (2008-G-3) is in
excellent condition. The double edged blade has a diamond shaped cross
section. From the base of the blade downwards the edges are running parallel
and are then tapering strongly towards the tip. The upper third of the blade
is formed to an asymmetrical ricasso and is decorated with a floral ornament
in golden damascene on blackened ground.
The grip is formed by the flat and profiled tang with ivory scales riveted
to both sides. At the lower part of the hilt the ivory scales are formed
into round discs protruding to the sides.
Attached to the other side of the tang are two disc-like "ears" made of
ivory. This type of double disc decoration is the reason for the name "ear
dagger" often applied to this kind of weapon.
The visible sides of the tang are all decorated with golden damascene.
